Shore Studios spent the weekend of October 27-29 capturing stunning aerials of Sultana Education Foundation's Downrigging Weekend Tall Ship and Wooden Boat Festival in Chestertown, Maryland. Starting casually as a sail between the Pride of Baltimore and the newly built Sultana in 2001, in its 17th year, Downrigging Weekend has grown into one of the largest gatherings of Tall Ships in the Mid-Atlantic region.
We can't think of a better location than Chestertown--one of America's best preserved colonial ports--as a better host for this magnificent gathering of wooden boats. Chestertown was once one of six Royal Ports of Entry into the colony of Maryland during colonial times and its port rivaled larger urban shipping centers like Baltimore in terms of the level of commerce flowing through customs. During Downrigging weekend, one can catch a glimpse of what Chestertown's waterfront might very well have looked like in colonial times.
Being here at Downrigging Weekend gives one a new appreciation for craftmanship. The tall ships featured at this event are replicas of ships that sailed the seas centuries ago and were recreated using many of the same techniques and tools that were used to build the originals. Tall Ships present included: Sultana, Pride of Baltimore II, Lynx, Lady Maryland, Kalmar Nyckle, Elsworth, Sigsbee, and A.J. Meerwald.
Shore Studios is teaming up with the awesome folks at Andover Media in Galena, MD to create a highlight video capturing the breathtaking moments of Downrigging Weekend.
